Impact & Storm Windows in The Woodlands, TX
Laminated impact-rated glass and storm-resistant assemblies for wind-borne debris, plus a noticeable drop in outside noise. Worth pricing on your most exposed elevations.
What makes glass impact-rated
Impact-rated glazing is laminated: two panes bonded to a tough interlayer, the same principle as a car windscreen. Struck hard enough it will crack, but the interlayer holds the pieces in place rather than letting them come into the room.
The rating belongs to the whole assembly, not just the glass. The frame, the anchoring and the installation all have to hold, which is why an impact unit fitted into an unprepared opening is not doing what the label says.
Storm windows are the other approach: a secondary glazed panel fitted over the existing window. They cost less and add a real layer of protection, but they are a different product with different limits, and we will tell you which of the two your situation actually calls for.
When it is worth pricing
Impact glazing does not have to go on the whole house. These are the openings where it usually earns its cost.
Large panes with mature trees over them
Under this canopy the debris risk is as much falling limb as open-sky wind. Big glass under big oaks is the obvious candidate.
An exposed elevation with no shelter
Open lots and corner plots take wind that neighbours' houses would otherwise break up.
Bedrooms and rooms you occupy during a storm
If a window is going to fail somewhere, this is where you least want it to.
Traffic or highway noise
Laminated glass cuts noise noticeably. Homes near I-45, the Grand Parkway or a busy feeder often buy it for this alone.
Ground-floor windows out of sight of the street
Laminated glass is significantly harder to break through, which is a security benefit as much as a storm one.
You are already replacing those openings
The labour is the same either way. Upgrading the glass package while the opening is open is the cheapest time to do it.
How we do it
Impact units are heavier than standard glazing, and the install has to account for that.
Rank your openings by exposure
We walk the elevations and tell you which openings justify impact glass and which do not, rather than quoting the whole house at the top spec.
Check the opening will carry it
Laminated units are heavy. We confirm the framing and anchoring can take the load before specifying.
Anchor to the assembly's requirements
The rating is only real if the unit is fastened the way the manufacturer tested it. We follow that specification, not a shortcut.
Flash, seal and document
Standard weatherproofing plus the product documentation, which is what an insurer will ask you for if you pursue a discount.
Inland is not out of reach
Montgomery County sits well back from the coast, and plenty of people here reasonably assume impact glazing is a Galveston problem. Hurricane Beryl in July 2024 corrected that assumption for a lot of households — sustained wind, heavy limb fall, and days without power across The Woodlands.
The specific risk here is the canopy that makes this community what it is. A branch driven into a large pane does the same thing a piece of coastal debris does. That is why we talk about impact glazing opening by opening rather than as a whole-house product.
Impact and storm questions
Including the ones where the honest answer is check with your insurer.
It is not mandated here the way it is in coastal wind-borne debris regions. This is a choice you make on exposure and peace of mind, not a code requirement we can point at.
Price It on the Openings That Need It
We will walk the house, tell you which elevations genuinely justify impact glass, and quote those openings separately so you can decide with real numbers in front of you.
