Why specialty shapes get templated
A rectangle can be described with two numbers. An arch cannot. Its radius, its spring point, and how truly symmetrical it is are all things that have to be captured from the opening itself rather than read off a plan.
Houses also move. A twenty-year-old arched transom over an entryway is rarely the exact shape it was framed as, and a unit ordered to the original dimension will show a gap on one side that no amount of trim hides convincingly.
So we take a physical template of the opening as it exists today and the unit is manufactured to that. It costs an extra visit and it is the only way these come out looking right.
Openings that need this treatment
If your window is any of these, it is a templated unit rather than a catalogue order.
Arched or half-round transom
The classic entryway and stairwell detail across the newer villages. Radius and spring point both have to be captured.
Trapezoid under a raked ceiling
Vaulted great rooms produce angled openings where the pitch is never quite what the drawing said.
Octagon or circle
Accent windows in gables and bathrooms. Small, awkward, and completely unforgiving of an approximate fit.
Two-storey stairwell glass
Tall assemblies where the opening has settled differently at top and bottom over the years.
A shape nobody stocks
If a supplier tells you it is a special order with an eight-week lead, it is a templated unit.
Existing unit fogged or leaking
Specialty units fail like any other. The difference is that the replacement cannot be ordered off a list.

Expect one extra visit and a longer manufacturing wait than a standard window.
Template the real opening
A physical template of the shape as it is today, including any asymmetry, rather than a dimension from the original plan.
Match the glass and the grille
The specialty unit has to read as part of the same house as the rectangles around it, which means matching the coating and any grille pattern.
Build to the template
Manufacturing runs longer on these. We confirm the date and keep you posted rather than leaving you guessing.
Set with access handled
Many of these are high up. Access equipment is planned into the job so install day is not the day we discover we need it.
Arched entryways are everywhere here
Walk any street in Sterling Ridge, Creekside Park or Carlton Woods and you will see the same details repeating: an arched transom over the front door, a tall stairwell window beside it, a gable accent unit above. It is the architectural signature of that era of Woodlands building.
