The number that matters here is SHGC
Every certified window carries an NFRC label with a handful of numbers on it. U-factor measures how much heat escapes through the window. SHGC — solar heat gain coefficient — measures how much of the sun's heat comes through the glass. Lower is less.
ENERGY STAR sets different criteria for different climate zones, and we sit in the Southern zone. Here the cooling season runs most of the year, so SHGC carries far more weight than the U-factor a northern homeowner would shop on.
A low-E coating is a microscopically thin metallic layer that reflects heat while letting light through. Argon between the panes slows heat transfer, and a warm-edge spacer stops the frame edge becoming a shortcut for it. Together they are why a properly specified window keeps a west-facing room usable in August.
Signs your glass is costing you money
None of these are subtle once you know what to look for.
One room you cannot cool
Almost always a west or south elevation with a lot of glass and no low-E coating on it.
Glass that is hot to the touch
Put your hand near the pane in the afternoon. If it radiates, the solar heat is coming straight in.
A cooling bill that keeps climbing
Season-over-season increases with no change in habits usually trace back to the building envelope.
The air conditioner never cycles off
A system running continuously in the afternoon is fighting heat gain it cannot win against.
Faded flooring and furniture
Unfiltered UV. Modern low-E coatings cut a large share of it without tinting the view.
Single-pane or clear double-pane glass
If there is no coating on the glass at all, you are running an uncoated window in a Gulf-Coast summer.
How we spec it
Not every opening in your house needs the same glass, and pretending otherwise is how people overpay.
Walk the elevations
We note which way each opening faces and how much shade the canopy actually gives it. A north wall under oaks is a different problem from an unshaded west wall.
Match the glass package to the exposure
Aggressive low-E where the sun lands, a lighter package where it does not, so you keep daylight where you want it.

Install so the glass can perform
Flashed, insulated and sealed properly. A high-spec window fitted badly performs worse than a modest one fitted well.
Southern-zone glass, not a northern spec
A homeowner in Michigan is buying insulation against cold. You are buying a shield against solar heat for eight months of the year. The two need different glass, and a national brochure will not make that distinction for you.
The Woodlands adds a wrinkle worth using: the tree canopy genuinely shades a lot of elevations. Where it does, you can often keep a brighter glass package and save money. Where the canopy thins out — newer sections of Creekside Park, open lots along Woodlands Parkway — you want the aggressive coating.
